I emailed her directly to update her on our efforts to restore wild sweetgrass for the Gullah Basketweaving Community in SC and to ask if she would consider making a donation for us to commission sweetgrass baskets from legacy basket weaver and MacArthur “Genius” Fellow Mary Jackson. She agreed and readily sent us a check for $25,000. We used those funds to acquire a traditional urn and sewing basket from Elder Jackson for our permanent collection and traveling exhibition. Initially, I was hesitant to email the donor but thought, BE BOLD!"
